Your body is complex in design with systems that work in conjunction with one another to keep your body functioning in tip-top condition. More often than not, your body will tell you when something isn’t working correctly. Sometimes this can be in a dramatic way that is hard to ignore and sometimes in more subtle ways that are often pushed off to a later time. Your feet can tell you a lot about the overall functions of your body and it’s important to pay attention to your foot health by being aware of any information that your feet are trying to tell you. At Belmont Anderson Podiatry, we are the experts when it comes to caring and maintaining the health of your feet along with monitoring your feet for the potential warning signs that can be associated with serious health conditions.
Feet health warning signs to indicate your feet are trying to tell you that something is wrong!
Hairless feet: If you have very little or no hair on your feet, your circulation may not be working as efficiently as it should be. This indicates that you are experiencing a problem with blood flow. Consult your physician for health screening and additional testing.
Toenails that appear to be sunken-in: Toenails that are sunken-in may indicate that you are anemic. A simple blood test at your physician’s office can check your iron levels, and your general practitioner can prescribe iron supplements to get your iron levels back in check.
Sores on your feet that won’t heal: Sores that won’t heal or take an excessively long amount of time to heal, may indicate that you have excessive glucose in your system. Excessive glucose can be a symptom of diabetes so it is important to see your physician immediately for further testing.
Cold feet: If your feet are constantly cold, discuss your concerns with your Belmont Anderson Podiatrist who will advise making an appointment with your physician. Cold feet can be an indication that you have a thyroid issue.
Yellow toenails: Thick yellow toenails not only look unsightly, they may also indicate that you have a toenail fungus. Your Belmont Anderson podiatrist can administer a treatment plan including topical mediation to combat this common foot problem.
Heel pain or discomfort: If you experience discomfort or a sharp pain in your heel upon standing, you may be experiencing plantar faciitis, a condition which causes the plantar fascia ligaments to become inflamed. Your Belmont Anderson podiatrist can recommend a care and treatment protocol to help you combat this potentially deliberating condition.
Numbness in one or both feet: This can be a dangerous sign that you are diabetic. If you experience numbness in one or both feet, contact your physician immediately. Numbness that occurs in one foot can also be caused by a pinched nerve but it is always prudent to rule out diabetes which can be life threatening if left untreated.
Soreness in the foot joints: If you are experiencing constant pain in the joints of your toes, it could indicate the beginning of rheumatoid arthritis which left untreated can lead to deformity. Your Belmont Anderson podiatrist will discuss your treatment plans with you.
Flakey feet: Especially between the toes could indicate a common fungal skin infection known as Athlete’s foot. Symptoms include itching and burning. Athlete’s foot is often treated with an anti-fungal cream.
Digital clubbing: If the shape of your toes has started to change especially if they are bending upwards at the tips, get immediate advice from your health care professional as this change may be a sign of lung disease.
Toes that change colors: Toes that are red, white or blue in color may be a sign that you have Raynaud’s Disease. While it is not life threatening in itself, it may indicate that you are experiencing an autoimmune disease that requires further assessment by your general practitioner.
Toenail pitting: Tiny holes in your toenails may indicate that you have psoriasis including psoristic arthritis. Your Belmont Anderson podiatrist can advise you of your treatment options
